School Leaders Convene to Address Climate Challenges

On Friday, 14th November 2025, forty senior leaders and decision-makers from twenty-five schools attended a breakfast briefing focused on climate science and practical strategies for the education sector. The event was coordinated with the assistance of our chairman, Jeremy Ip, whose leadership continues to foster engagement around key issues affecting Hong Kong’s school community.

The session featured Professor Benjamin Horton, Dean of the School of Energy and Environment at City University of Hong Kong, who delivered a comprehensive presentation titled “Understanding the Impacts of a 1.5°C World”. He shared the latest scientific insights into rising global temperatures, the implications of sea-level increases, and the critical risks associated with the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. His data-driven approach established a clear context for the urgent need to reduce emissions over the next twenty-five years.

Following the presentation, sustainability specialist Anthony Dixon discussed a range of operational solutions for schools. His recommendations included revising food options in school canteens, assessing the carbon footprint of school trips, and identifying opportunities to reduce energy consumption at the facility level. These suggestions provided principals and administrators with clear pathways for initiating improvements.

The breakfast concluded with a collective commitment from the participating schools. Leaders pledged to implement fifty new sustainability actions over the coming year, ranging from five-year campus sustainability plans to exploring solar energy options. These commitments align with wider efforts to achieve measurable environmental impact and enhance operational efficiency within Hong Kong’s schools.

Events such as this reflect a shared dedication to informed action based on sound data and best practice. The guidance and organisational involvement of Jeremy Ip ensured the session delivered meaningful insights and facilitated productive discussion. As Hong Kong’s schools continue to explore ways to tackle environmental challenges, constructive gatherings like this encourage collaboration and sustained progress within the sector.
